The Andrew Bravener Discussion

For those of you that are involved in the youtube "community" and watch my videos, you will probably realise that I have not yet made a response to the Andrew Bravener "Open Letter to Youtube" discussion. And I'm not just being a pretentious hipster who refuses to participate because everyone else is, I do have my reasoning.

The first issue with me participating in this discussion is, all that I want to say has already been said. I can't speak a single original word on the topic. Some of my favourites include: this, this and most definitely this.

Another reason that I've kept from making a video, is that I believe the community is there if you look for it. I mean, I see so many people in my subscriptions box willing to take the time to put effort into videos, comment back, make responses. It's mainly the little guys that do it anyway. So you want community? Talk to the little guys. They've got it going on. However, I do believe that featuring smaller youtubers would be a good technical change for the site. So what do you think of this whole "Open Letter to Youtube" discussion?

I'll be putting up a new video as soon as I get some stock footage with my camera, no need to fear, the alphabet challenge continues. That is all.

Oh wait, also, I'm doing this now...

Fashion, put it all on me!

Currently playing: Fashion - Lady Gaga.

Hello all, let's talk about something not very purposeful today. Let's have a bit of fun as I talk about some clothes that I want. Yep. There is pretty much no obligation to read this post at all.

So up until a couple weeks ago, pretty much the only things that I owned in my wardrobe were a bunch of t-shirts and a pair of jeans. In the shoes department, only a singular pair of really beat up converse. And I'm not the one to care too much about what I wear, but I don't mind wearing things that make me feel pretty - and honestly, jeans and a tee doesn't so that (for me at least).

I recently let one of my friends dress me up and take me out to dinner. She was lovely and we have a similar build, so I wandered about in a dress. I felt comfortable and confident. And I like that feeling. Since then, she's offered to take me dress shopping, which should be good. In an ideal world, everything that I buy will be fair trade, but in this consumerist world, we all know that's a hard task.

In the two weeks since I went out and felt pretty (must... resist... West Side Story... reference...) I have since bought a few new nice things, like a dress and some shoes. I've been wearing skirts with my lovely nerdy tees and have been trying not to look horrible. Don't get me wrong, I am fully aware that there are far more important things in the world than clothes, but I don't mind wearing nice things every once in a while.

That being said, let's look at some things Natalie wants!:

Well there you go. Have a nice day, I'm going to go eat some vegan pizza and wonder why my town never has cute clothes.

Content

Hey there guys, so I've decided recently that when it comes to vlogging, I want to go a bit deeper. Actually, I lie, I've always wanted to be a bit deeper with vlogging. Let me explain, you see, how I discovered vlogging in the first place was through topical vloggers a really long time ago (2007ish?). And I've always liked that sort of thing. Talking about topics at hand, stuff that matters, having a community; I like proper discussion.

Don't get me wrong, I do love amazing, light-hearted and hilarious content from others, but it's not for me. I just can't make a great vlog that everyone could relate to and laugh at. It's not for me, I'm not funny. But one thing I am good at, is thinking. And I mean that in a totally not-up-myself kind of way. But right now, I'm just not vlogging to my full potential. Right now I mainly just do silly fluff sort of stuff. I talk about bobby pins rather than world issues, and honestly, that bothers me.

I want to make a (however small) change in the world and reduce the total amount of suck left in it. But I just can't do that with videos of dramatic owls. It just won't do.

So what is it that want to do? Well, whilst I don't plan on making amazingly dramatic changes that could promise to change the entirety of the world *cough* it's not like we've known any vloggers to do that *cough* but I do want to make a few minor changes that would make the channel a bit more... me. I want to be able to look back on my channel and see how I thought as I did when I was a teenager (and most likely cringe at how naive I may have been). That's it, a folio of my thoughts, that's what I want. Many vloggers document their lives or experiences, but I want to document how mine have made me feel about certain things. I want to document my thoughts. I want to learn from others, get video responses, make video responses, be part of the community. I want to learn.

I made this decision while watching a series of video responses at 3:17AM the other day, but I can promise you that this is what I want. And I hope you guys will stick with me as I fight through the fluff on my channel and make it into something more meaningful. Years from now, I don't want to be the vapid teen girl who talked about the various silly things that annoyed her, I want to be the girl who did the best she could with the voice that she had.

I should blog more often.

Hello internets. So I know that it seems that I only post about posting lately, which evidently gets boring rather quickly. So I'm going to avoid the probably less-than-necessary apologies and try my hardest not to spiel on about how my daily life keeps me from reaching your monitors.

That being said, let's go over some ideas and such that I have been having lately. So it's April right now, and for a lot of youtubers, that means VEDA. VEDA, or Vlog Every Day in April was something that I thought long and hard about, but decided ultimately not to do it. Actually, that's a lie, I just forgot to look at my calendar and therefore missed the starting date. So rather than doing VEDA or BEDA I've decided that I steal my friend Dee's idea - alphabet vlogging. I will start that when I can, so I hope you can check my alphabet vlogs out soon.

Also, I got a new camera on my birthday, so I'm still trying to configure it. I will post videos when that is done, and blogs whenever something interesting comes to mind.

Return to Blogging

I currently sit here at home sick from school, which yes, I have actually been attempting to focus on. I've been going pretty well with it. But sadly, this little crevice in the interwebs has been suffering serious malnutrition from the lack of posts. However, I promise I shall get back to blogging once more, I just need a topic to do so.

All in all, you're just another brick in the wall.

I'm excited about it. I'm dreading it. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with school.

For those of you that aren't familiar with the schooling system of Australia, I head back for another year of high school on Tuesday. Then I get a bunch of days off because of public holidays, and confusion ensues. However, my main concern for this post is school itself.

I started vlogging at New Year, which meant that I have been on school holidays the entire time. I upload videos every Thursday and Sunday. However, when I head back to school, I am not sure if this schedule can continue. Never fear, I shall still make a video a week unless something really big comes up. Sundays are my definite days, don't worry.

The only reason I am concerned is because of the workload I have this year. Being the idiot that I am, I've assigned myself a lot of extension classes. I've promised to put my education first. Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure. I feel that challenging myself would be beneficial.

I'm not sure how my video schedule will continue through the year, but know this, I will most certainly make a conscious effort to balance both school and the internet. If college students can manage it, so can I. Videos will be up on Sundays and (most) Thursdays.

I'm not exactly sure how I feel about going back to school. I love my friends a lot and I would enjoy seeing them. Although, I'm not too fond of being bombarded in tasks. Alas, this is school life. I do like to learn, I just don't like having so much work to do that I can not fit in fun. And as much of a Ravenclaw as I am, I do love my fun. We'll see how this year goes, I'm sure I'll get back into routine soon.

Those Prehistoric Things Called Books

I love used book stores. So it was to my delight that when I ventured into the abyss of 'outdoors' and had a wee bit of a social life today, I noticed a tiny little book store squashed in the middle of nowhere. This particular used book store was a nerdy dream! There were Star Wars novels everywhere, original orange Penguin novels, there were editions of Sherlock novels from the fifties, Doctor Who books from aeons ago and Star Trek episodes on VHS (yes, VHS my friends, those were the days!); it was as if this place were frozen in time.

Then a thought hit me that was slightly unnerving. As we've moved and progressed through mediums of entertainment through the ages, will books ever become a thing of the past? Will I be that weird uncool mum who enjoys lifting the pages of a good old book? Popular culture has certainly evolved over the years, after all, who still listens to radio plays? With the birth of television, colour television, 3D television; consumers certainly love the latest gadgets. Various forms of music have also progressed, from vinyl records to iPods, we've certainly seen change in the industry. We really do live in a digital age.

With the birth of E-Readers much debate has occurred over whether books were really worth it. Some question the environmental issues with the printing of books, as they are obviously made of paper. Whilst I believe firmly in saving the environment, I am all for books, and I believe that they can be printed in a sustainable way. A way of keeping the environment in check whilst still having the benefit of the printed word is of course Mixed Sources, for example, in my beloved copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, it declares openly that it is printed upon paper from well managed forests.

Quite frankly, I do not see the fuss of E-Readers, and staring at a screen for too long can make my eyes go fuzzy (I blame the Nargles). However, I am certainly for reading no matter how a person chooses to do so. Will books slowly be phased out? I very much doubt that, not in my lifetime anyway. And I hope not. Old fashioned books have existed for centuries, and most likely will for centuries more. A person may do as they wish in regards to reading a book and I wish them well should they choose to read digitally. I have experimented with E-Readers and have not found them to my liking, but to each their own. I guess I just love the smell of books and the feel of paper too much.

During the course of the 50 books challenge, and the rest of my life...

Read the Printed Word!

P.S. My next vlog is about books. Spoilers!

Blogging, Social Ineptitude and Badassery

As I sit here staring at my screen with far too many tabs open than I ever thought to be humanly possible or necessary, I begin to realise what clicking the little link that read sign up actually did. As a really open nerd, I consider myself to be fairly socially inept; amazing social skills are generally not associated with being a nerd. However, in signing up for yet another website where I put myself out to the world in posting whatever comes to mind I realise just how socially involved I actually am. Whilst most modern social networking occurs in front of a screen nowadays, it is not at all fair to say that this is not interaction. It is. Sure, you can't see my mannerisms as I type this right now, nor can you hear my voice or my awkward pausing and paraphrasing, yet it is true that these words have inevitably reached you if you have read this far.

I believe that it takes quite a lot of courage for a person to put themselves out to the world, to say "Hey, this is what I have to say, and I am proud!" and sure, while literally voicing yourself in a public place may achieve this, it is far easier said than done. Typing behind a screen seems quite a lot easier than speaking to a person, nay, a group of people face to face, but it still is a medium to convey thoughts and ideas. In blogging, I am able to hide behind a screen, and how are you to know that I am shovelling ravioli in my mouth during my awkward pauses mid thought? Yet, the notion is still the same, I am talking to an audience.

What I am getting at is that while there may be many mediums and social networking platforms, when it comes down to communication, to truly speak the mind is something to aspire to. So nerds on the internet out there, especially those with blogs, I tip my hat to your courage and intellectual badassery.

In creating this blog, I hope to speak my mind. I shall most likely post whenever I feel I have a good idea that can be expanded upon, as not to fill this blog with posts that consist of 'LOL I BOUGHT A SONIC SCREWDRIVER TODAY, EPIC WIN!' ...there's tumblr for that. I may also make new blog posts when I make a new vlog on YouTube and wish to explain further, or the back story behind it.

Basically, I made a blog, this is it. Welcome. I hope to write something of more substance or at least something remotely entertaining soon.
